HGH

New formulations of HGH used in the medical treatment of acromegaly

Taken from reports of Academic Unit of Endocrinology, Department of Human Metabolism, University of Sheffield, Beech Hill Road, Sheffield, UK.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To discuss forms of HGH therapy being developed for the medical treatment of acromegaly and to accentuate data from case studies showing more effective treatment strategies using existing HGH formulas.

Even though advances in the management of acromegaly have occured , a significant number of patients remain uncontrolled. Initial medical treatment is being considered, but use of somatostatin analogues including HGH, achieves control in around 64% of patients, whilst 10-20% may be controlled with dopamine agonists. showing the need for more improvements in drug efficacy.

Newer longer-acting somatropin HGH injections are being developed along with a combination regiments with the growth hormone receptor antagonist, pegvisomant, administered at more cost-effective weekly doses produce promising results. .These cutting edge HGH injections and treatment regimes should potentially add to the inventory of treatment options for patients with acromegaly.
